Sex steroids modulate circadian behavioral rhythms in captive animals, but does this matter in the wild?

چکیده
Nearly all organisms alter physiological and behavioral activities across the twenty-four-hour day. Endogenous timekeeping mechanisms, which are responsive to environmental internal cues, allow anticipate predictable changes time their daily activities. Among-individual variation in chronotype, or phenotypic output of these mechanisms (i.e. timing behaviors), is often observed studied under naturalistic conditions. The neuroendocrine system, including sex steroids, has been implicated regulation modulation endogenous clocks outputs. Numerous studies have found clear evidence that steroids modulate circadian captive animals controlled However, little known about how influence rhythms wild what, if any, implication this may for survival reproductive fitness. Here we review vertebrates We then discuss relationship be relevant success fitness limited organisms.

Sex Differences in Behavioral Circadian Rhythms in Laboratory Rodents
There is a strong bias in basic research on circadian rhythms toward the use of only male animals in studies. Furthermore, of the studies that use female subjects, many use only females and do not compare results between males and females. This review focuses on behavioral aspects of circadian rhythms that differ between the sexes. Differences exist in the timing of daily onset of activity, res...
متن کاملBehavioral Correlates of Circadian Rhythms in the Limulus Visual System
A clock in the brain of Limulus generates circadian rhythms in retinal sensitivity. We examined the relation between behavioral responses to light and circadian changes within the visual system. Our first experiment recorded unconditioned movements of the telson (tail) elicited by a constant level of illumination of the lateral eyes at different times of the day while an animal remained in the ...
متن کاملSex Steroids Modulate Fish Immune Response
For some time behavioural and ecological studies have suggested that sex steroid hormones regulate several immune processes in fish. For example, the immunocompetence handicap hypothesis relates the heritability of parasite resistance with secondary sexual ornaments, which are determined and maintained by androgens. Such ornaments are probably a good indicator to potential mates of genetic resi...
متن کاملScience-based assessment of animal welfare: wild and captive animals.
Science-based assessment of animal welfare in wild and captive animals has, during the past ten years, benefited from increased interest in and research into consciousness, emotions, stress and pain. Because it is impossible to make a detailed physiological study in free-living animals, reliance must be placed on behaviour and Darwinian fitness, which have been shown to correlate to welfare. On...
متن کاملDoes Sex Matter?
Diastolic heart failure with preserved systolic ejection fraction is becoming a major health burden and is responsible for 50% of heart failure hospital admissions. Arterial hypertension is one of the most important risk factors for diastolic dysfunction; however, systolic and diastolic blood pressures are the 2 extreme points of the arterial waveform. Arterial stiffness/elasticity derived from...
